What Are You Living For?

Most of us naturally ask, "Am I allowed to do this?" But Paul spends four chapters in 1 Corinthians helping us ask a better question: "Will this glorify God?"

From chapters 8 through 10, Paul addresses food sacrificed to idols, but his concern is much deeper than food. He is teaching believers what it means to live with Christ at the center. Christian freedom is not about doing whatever we want; it is about using our freedom in ways that honor God and build up others.

Paul first reminds us that love is greater than knowledge (1 Corinthians 8). Then he points to his own life, showing that he willingly gave up personal rights so the gospel would not be hindered (1 Corinthians 9). He warns Israel's example should not be ignored, because a heart that drifts from God will always find something else to worship (1 Corinthians 10:1–22). Finally, he brings everything together with one simple command: "Whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God" (1 Corinthians 10:31).

That is the question every Christian should carry into daily life. Not merely, "Can I?" but "Will this glorify God?"

Jesus is the perfect example. Though He possessed every right as the Son of God, He chose the path of humble obedience. He did not seek His own comfort or advantage but the will of the Father and the salvation of the world. At the cross, God's glory and our greatest good came together through Christ's sacrificial love.

Because Jesus gave Himself for us, we no longer have to live for ourselves. We are free to love others, surrender our rights when needed, and make every decision with one purpose in mind—to glorify God.

The Christian life is not ultimately about protecting our freedoms. It is about joyfully pointing every part of our lives back to the One who gave everything for us.
