Jonah 1–3: The Prophet Who Ran from God

A storm. A fish. A city that deserved fire but got mercy.

Jonah flees God’s call to preach to Nineveh—the brutal capital of Israel’s enemies—because he knows the scandalous truth: 

“If I go, God might actually forgive them.” 

Chapter 1: Jonah runs. 

Chapter 2 Jonah prays from the belly of the fish (and discovers grace is bigger than the grave). 

Chapter 3 Jonah preaches the shortest, angriest sermon ever… and the entire wicked city—from king to cattle—repents in sackcloth.

The same God who pursued one rebellious prophet with a storm now pursues a whole pagan empire with compassion.

And that compassion? It reaches further than Jonah ever wanted—straight to the cross, where Israel’s enemies (us) are welcomed home.

This Sunday we’re tracing the God who chases runaways and saves people we’d rather see judged.
