No Lawsuits Among Brothers: Seek Reconciliation

Mitch Davis

First Corinthians 6:1-11 finds Paul addressing a shocking problem in the Corinthian church: believers suing one another in secular courts before unbelieving judges. He argues this is a failure because Christians, who will one day judge the world, should be wise enough to settle minor disputes among themselves.

Paul reminds them that unrighteous behavior doesn't align with their new identity in Christ. He lists many sins and stresses that although they used to be like that, they have been washed, sanctified, and justified in the name of Jesus and by the Holy Spirit, calling them to live accordingly.

Paul pushes the congregation to consider a radical alternative: why not rather be wronged or cheated for the sake of the gospel’s witness? He warns that the "unrighteous" will not inherit the kingdom of God, listing behaviors that characterized their past lives. However, the passage concludes with a powerful reminder of the Gospel’s transformative power. Paul declares, "And such were some of you," pointing to the reality that they have been washed, sanctified, and justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of God. Their new identity must now dictate how they handle conflict and treat one another.
