Mary, Martha, and Lazarus

Nov 23, 2025    Mitch Davis

When Jesus entered their home in Bethany, three siblings revealed three different ways of relating to Him—and to each other. Martha bustled with service, anxious and distracted. Mary sat at His feet, choosing the "better part." Lazarus... well, he would soon become the greatest testimony to Jesus' power.

What happens when family members follow Jesus differently?

Martha's complaint—"Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself?"—exposes a wound many families know too well. Her service was genuine, but her resentment toward Mary's choice created distance. Mary's devotion was beautiful, but did she consider her sister's burden?

Then came the death. When Lazarus died, both sisters ran to Jesus with the exact same words: "Lord, if you had been here, my brother would not have died." Same grief. Same faith. Same doubt. Yet Jesus responded to each uniquely—engaging Martha's theology, weeping with Mary's sorrow.

The power of family faith isn't in uniform behavior—it's in how we point each other back to Christ.
